| Series: POSSESSING THE LAND: THE PROCESS OF MENTORING |
| #1367-A YOU'VE WANDERED LONG ENOUGH
| This lesson is the first in a series on mentoring. Using the book of Deuteronomy as a backdrop, we will look at Moses and the Israelites as they stood ready to possess the land. In the process we will also see how God used Moses to train Joshua for leadership. God told the Israelites "You've wandered long enough" What was their response? |
| #1367-B DISCOURAGED HEARTS AND BAD DECISIONS
| The Israelites had wandered in the wilderness for forty years. Now, God was going to give them another chance. All they had to do was trust that the Lord had given them this land and go up and possess it. What was their response? They hesitated. They became discouraged. They were at the end of their journey and still did not possess the land. What caused them to question God? |
| #1368-A WHEN THE MEMORY GOES
| There are times for all of us when our memory fails. That loss of memory and its consequences are the subject of this study as we continue to look into the book of Deuteronomy. Moses gives the Israelites a history lesson concerning the rebellion of their fathers in refusing to go in and possess the land the Lord had given them. In what ways do we rebel against the will of God? Why does God bring giants in our paths? We want the land, but we don't want to have to fight giants to get it. We have fallen into an ocean of forgetfulness and don't remember God's leading and love through similar lands of giants. |
| #1368-B I AM NOT AMONG YOU
| God is the only one who can defeat the enemy. We live in a society that teaches from kindergarten up that we are the ones who can. God had clearly told Israel not to go and fight because, "I am not among you.". He could have defeated all the giants, but because of Israel's rebellion, He chose to withdraw. The Israelites then tried to defeat the enemy in their own strength. What happens when we move into battle without God? We do it every day. We try harder, and we become more frustrated. There is a solution. |
| #1369-A CHASED LIKE BEES
| The Israelites had decided to go fight the giants in the land, even though God had clearly said "I am not among you". They presumed that since they had admitted their sins, that God would fight for them. They were now going to do in the flesh what God had offered to do supernaturally in the Spirit. In this lesson we are going to take a closer look at the principles of presumption that caused defeat for the Israelites and also give ourselves a test to see how much we presume upon God. |
| #1369-B THOU HAST LACKED NOTHING
| What is in our hearts? God knows, but He wants us to know, too. Moses reiterates to the people how God had kept them the forty years in the wilderness. He tested them and showed them what was in their heart, so they would learn to rely completely upon God. There was no better school room than the wilderness, and there was no better teacher than God. There were times when He had to take away the very things the people didn't think they could do without, in order to teach them that physical blessings have no eternal value except in how unselfishly they are given away. In the realm of the Spirit, we lack nothing. Everything else is passing away. |
| #1370-A SOME SHALL TREMBLE
| The battle is not ours but God's. This is the secret of spiritual warfare. The key to victory is staying at God's feet and listening to God's Word. Spiritual warfare is the result of a relationship, and the result will always be victory, either here or in glory. |
| #1370-B WHEN GOD SAYS, "NO"
| God always wants to bless us, but sometimes His blessing comes through the word "no". Moses learned that the hard way as he disobeyed what God told him to do. It did not mean God did not love Moses, but He is also a just God and makes Moses pay the consequences for violating His command. Can we begin praising God for the "no" as well as the "yes" in answer to our prayers? The answer "no" may well be the most beautiful answered prayer ever heard. |
| #1371-A THE LEGACY OF A LIFE: THE MIRACLE OF MENTORING
| What kind of legacy can we leave that will live on after we are gone, yet will not reflect the decline of our physical or mental abilities as the years take their toll? Scripture has the answer-it is people. We will begin a series of lessons to look in depth at how Moses poured his life into Joshua, until he finally handed the mantle of leadership to Him. He was to charge him, encourage him, and strengthen him. See how we can use these same principles to begin pouring our lives into others. |
| #1371-B THE THINGS YOU'VE SEEN AND HEARD (BY EXAMPLE)
| God's great plan is the transfer of life from one believer to another. Life is transferred in many ways, but this lesson looks specifically at the transfer of life through example. It is what Jesus did for those three years when He gave His life to twelve men. The things the disciples had seen and heard became the message they had to declare. So it was with Moses and Joshua. Joshua had walked hand in hand with this mighty man of God for years. He encountered the same challenges, endured the same persecution, and enjoyed the same victories. He saw and heard how Moses responded. We are, too, like Moses, living examples to someone in the Christian life. They are examining the Christian faith in light of our lives. What will they have seen and heard? |
| #1372-A MENTORING BY INTERCESSION #1
| Interceding is hard work. As Joshua went into battle, Moses went to the top of the hill, raised the rod of God, and interceded for Joshua. Interceding was perhaps the hardest thing Moses had to do. This was a man's heart reaching out to God's heart on behalf of someone who was virtually a son to him. Learn how we can intercede for our own Joshuas who are on the battlefield of life. Learn how to fight in the Spirit and receive spiritual results. |
| #1372-B MENTORING BY INTERCESSION #2
| Intercession is a battle. How do we effectively intercede for someone and for whom should we regularly be interceding? This is part two of a three part series on intercession. God is calling each of us to a ministry ;many of us have ignored. He is calling us to lift our hearts to heaven even as Moses lifted his arms to heaven on behalf of others who are in the thick of the battle. |
| #1373-A MENTORING BY INTERCESSION #3
| This is the last study on mentoring by intercession. This lesson looks at how and why the Spirit of God intercedes for us as we pray. We also will see how the Son of God is in heaven continually making intercession to the Father on our behalf. Also, this lesson takes us back to the beautiful picture Jesus painted in John 17 as He approached the Father, praying for us. We must learn how to stand in the gap for others just as Jesus continues to do for us. |
| #1373-B MENTORING BY REMINDING #1
| Satan is ready to snatch from our minds the memory of the wonderful things God has done on our behalf. As we continue the series on mentoring, we see Moses conducting a class in "Remembering 101" in his school of discipleship. He plans to teach four things 1)reasons to remember 2) some things to remember 3) the ways to remember 4) a plan for remembering. We must prepare to remember, because the older we get, the harder it gets unless we begin early to make provisions for the next generation. |
| #1374-A MENTORING BY REMINDING #2
| In our last lesson we looked at the importance of remembering. In this second lesson on remembering, our focus will be on what we are to remember. There are four key things that all Christians need to remember. How to etch these four things upon our memory banks will be the subject of this lesson. |
| #1374-B MENTORING BY REMINDING #3
| We've looked at why we are to mentor by reminding, and we've looked at what we are to be reminded of How can we see that the journey begins and the process goes on? There are very practical ways that we can create reminders for both ourselves and our families. The two keys to doing this are tying everything God has done to His Word and memorizing it and meditating on it. The key to doing that is something called accountability. We don't want to come to the end of our lives having forgotten to remember-but rather leaving a legacy of God-given memories to those around us. |
| #1375-A MENTORING BY TEACHING
| In examining the concept of mentoring by teaching, two main examples stand out-- how Jesus taught the disciples and how the Holy Spirit teaches us. Teaching involves correcting, redirecting, and encouraging. Each of these are used by Jesus as a method of teaching that leads to transformation. Transformation is the end product of true mentoring. Learn how to mentor God's way through God's Word. |
| #1375-B MENTORING BY ENCOURAGEMENT #1
| Why do we get discouraged? Discouragement is universal to the human soul, but the levels of discouragement and what it takes to overcome that discouragement will run the gamut. The sources of discouragement are many, but God has also provided the solutions. In order to begin encouraging, we first need to take time to look for the source of discouragement. Once that is found we are then able to place an overlay of God's perspective on top--there lies the true encouragement. |
| #1376-A MENTORING BY ENCOURAGEMENT #2
| One arena in which Christians often get discouraged is in the area of this world's goods. The greatest keys to discipling in this matter are that of priorities and pressure. There are several principles clearly revealed in Scripture that will help us help others to overcome the conflict over priorities as well as the pressures of conformity that create depression and discouragement. |
| #1376-B MENTORING THROUGH LIFE'S STORMS
| If there is a general theme in Paul's writings, it would be encouragement in the midst of trials. A great part of Paul's mentoring became a ministry of the magnificence of seeing the grace of God as it could only be seen through life's storms. How do we, as Paul, encourage others in difficult straits? In one sense, we need to be willing, if need be, to suffer to teach and demonstrate the grace that suffering provides; the strength that only weakness appropriates. |
| #1377-A MENTORING THROUGH THE WORD OF GOD #1
| The Word of God. There is nothing like it. The Word of God is the only medicine God has prescribed for spiritual healing. It is profitable for doctrine, reproof, for correction, and for instruction in righteousness. The question becomes how do we use the Word Of God? Do those we mentor stand in awe of God's Word? Do they know that it is 100% true about everything? Do they understand the place of God's Word in spiritual warfare? Those we mentor need to understand the wonder of this book. |
| #1377-B MENTORING THROUGH THE WORD OF GOD #2
| God's Word is alive. In part two of this study we are asked a few more questions about the Word of God. Is the Word of God the source of our faith? Do we read what is written about the Bible or the Bible itself? Does the Word of God produce joy? This is the living Word. It will forever change your perspective and will forever change your life. |
| #1378-A MENTORING: THE TRUE TEST #1
| Mentoring is a process. It is the pouring of one life into another; the making of one life accountable to another; and the tender, persistent commitment by one person to see that the other person keeps on growing. Perhaps the least utilized tool in our arsenal of mentoring is that of reproof. The true test of mentoring is a changed life. It happens when someone loves someone else enough to help them see their blind spots not as immovable objects, but as transformable opportunities. |
| #1378-B MENTORING: THE TRUE TEST #2
| The true test of mentoring is the changing of character over the process of time. Character is the only real yardstick the mentor has to apply to the heart of his disciple. How do we help another grow in the matter of character? The one who holds the key to character transformation is also the one who answers prayer. The key then comes in praying for those we disciple not so much for circumstances to change, but that character be transformed. |
